Jean Valjean is released from prison after 19 years. Desperate and rejected, "free" life is terrible for him. Then, an act of kindness changes his life forever and convinces him to become a good man. Later, rich and successful, Valjean tries to lead a good life, helping the poor. But wherever he goes in his new life, his old jailor, Inspector Javert, is one step behind him, determined to bring him to justice.
