The first recorded Olympic Games took place in Olympia in 776 BCE. The ancient Greeks saw them as a way of honouring the gods. The modern-day Olympic games started in 1896 and have usually taken place every four years. Today, athletes from all over the world compete in this huge international event, watched by billions of people worldwide. They're all united by the same ambition: to go for GOLD!
