Unemployed farmer Michael Henchard gets drunk one day and auctions his wife and daughter to the highest bidder. The next day, he bitterly regrets his action and promises to atone for it. He swears not to drink alcohol for the next 21 years. Twenty years later, the two women come looking for Henchard, who is now the successful Mayor of Casterbridge. What will happen next?
